DAY 5 | Conclusion
A Final Reflection
By: Josh Owens
While to a lot, this event doesn’t hold nearly as much value as it does to others, but let it serves as a reminder. Believe it our not Maryland does receive some tornadoes and severe weather throughout any given year. In fact the LaPlata event isn’t the first time i the past 15 years a tornado or tornadic event has visited us in Maryland. Some other areas that have been hit include: Frostburg MD (1998), College Park MD (2001) (YouTube), Southern Maryland bow echo (2008), even Hurricane Irene last year! We are no stranger to big storms.
To conclude, this event changed lives, altered the landscape, and gave LaPlata a new way to see the town. Some would say tornadoes are a horrible thing’s, but if you were to ask most who lived in LaPLata in 2002…they would say it was the best thing that happened for the town. It challenged and brought them together. While no one wishes a tornado or any other natural disaster on anywhere, its amazing to see the comeback that can be made. One other example is the folks in Greensburg KS, 95% of the town was wiped clean in a 2002 monster tornado. The 5 year anniversary is May 4th and our affiliate Cirrus Weather has a great reflection of the event here.
Thank you for reading these articles, the stories and images from this still are as incredible as they were 10 years ago.
